When was the last time you gave your belly some love? My belly has this way of letting me know when it’s been too long. It has a way of reminding me about unconditional self love and acceptance, and kindness to self.
When I eat foods that don’t work for my body my digestion gets thrown out of whack, and my lovely little belly puffs out like I’m preggers! And it’s amazing how a harmless physical reaction can spur old self talk and feelings such as the infamous “feeling fat” (which is followed by a “therefore”: unworthy, inadequate, unattractive…..it’s a loaded one, that one). I know that when I place a hand on my big belly, breathe into it, and connect with the rise and fall of my hand as it rests, it’s not a “good” belly or a “bad” belly or a “fat” belly – it’s a belly that is doing the best it can with what it’s been dealt at that moment in time.
When our belly is big or if we are just having a “feeling fat” kind of a day (and we all have them), the knee jerk reaction is to bolt, to detach from our bodies and find a safe house away from that gross fat feeling (More food? Wine anyone?). The irony is that our body IS our safe house. When we do even just a simple breathing exercise like the one above, we can find that security again. It is by connecting and listening to our body that we can course-correct. Our body will tell us when it is hungry, when it is full, and what kind of foods will optimize and regulate it. And better still, by trusting and taking refuge in our bodies we infuse compassion into our situation and ourselves.
If you are having a belly day, try listening to what your belly is actually saying. Have a conversation with it. Allow it to be exactly as it is. Breathe into it. Know that it is okay. Know that you are okay. It’s just a belly kind of day.

Little Creek B-Style
- 2/3 cup red raspberry vinegar (this is dead easy to make btw)
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/3 cup nutritional yeast
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 2 tbsp tamari
- Freshly ground pepper
Blend together the above ingredients and store in fridge in a sealed jar. Serve on your favourite salad. And if you want in on that salad pictured above: Shredded carrot, mixed greens, dried cranberries and pumpkin seeds. Done.
